Summary or Purpose:
Perform assigned payroll and accounting functions requiring the application of payroll accounting
principles and practices with a high degree of independence, judgment, skill, and dedication to duties,
responsibilities, and due dates.

Qualification Requirements

Education and/or Experience:
Graduate from high school or general education degree.
One to two years of related experience and/or training.
Language Skills:
Read and interpret procedures, policies, and regulations, such as safety rules, operating and
maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
Write routine reports and correspondence.

Effectively present information and respond to questions from supervisors, staff, and the public.
Mathematical Skills:
Add, subtract, multiply, and divide.
Perform these operations using units of American money and time measurement, weight, volume, and
distance.
Reasoning Ability:
Solve practical problems and deal with a variety of non-standard situations.
Interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

PAYROLL SPECIALIST
Other Skills and Abilities:
Experience in the use of office software including spreadsheets

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

➢ Maintain an acute comprehension and process all payroll functions based on District policies
and regulations including:

✓ NSBSD Handbooks
✓ North Slope Borough Education Association Negotiated Agreement
✓ North Slope Education Administrators’ Association Negotiated Agreement

➢ Perform payroll accounting functions through an approved process
✓ Bi-Weekly Employee payroll – all earnings of employees
✓ Time keeping program administration, management, and training
✓ Federal tax deposits
✓ TRS & PERS reporting and deposits
✓ Report and pay all other employee deductions.

➢ Coordinate with Human Resources
✓ Health & Life insurance eligibility and change information
✓ All benefit record keeping
✓ Workmen’s Compensation reporting

➢ Maintain payroll records for payroll cycle, bi-weekly, quarterly, and annual
payroll reconciliations

✓ Timesheets
✓ Leaves and absence records and files
✓ District’s sick leave bank
✓ Voluntary and non-voluntary deductions

➢ Prepare periodical request, bi-weekly, quarterly, and annual reconciled payroll reports
✓ 941 & Schedule B
✓ Unemployment
✓ Employee’s W-2’s / Employer’s W-3
✓ Other Federal, State, and local required employee reporting and surveys

➢ Work with Controller in reconciliation of all payroll-related balance sheet accounts

➢ Cross Train – provide support and backup when needed
✓ Monthly Payroll – all functions to provide support
✓ Miscellaneous Payroll inquiry processing – all functions
