Role and Responsibilities
Under general supervision, Tax Supervisors perform a variety of professional accounting work. Primary responsibility is preparing federal and state tax returns of individuals, businesses and estates; also prepares and maintains financial data and records for assigned clients and prepares other tax filings (sales, payroll, excise, etc.) as assigned. To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential function, listed below, satisfactorily, as they are representative of the knowledge, skill and abilities required. The omission of specific duties does not exclude them if the work is similar, related or a logical assignment to the position.
- Build on knowledge acquired in previous experience to increase functional level of technical and operational knowledge to proficiently perform assigned tasks
- Prepare more complex tax returns including individual, corporate, partnership, non-profit and estate
- Prepare more complex amended returns, personal tax projections, and carryback returns
- Assist the Director of Tax with the return review process
- Perform tax planning duties by compiling information for tax planning engagement, adjusting current year data, producing reports and making recommendations
- Perform estate settlement duties related to preparing court documents, structuring decedent’s final expenses, liquidating estates and distribution to heirs and preparing federal and state estate returns
- Ensure compliance with tax regulations and guidelines, minimizing tax liabilities
- Prepare and maintain financial data and records for assigned clients
- Utilize and increase a functional understanding of various tax programs, tax and research software, and internal workflow/procedures
- Exercise and model strict confidentiality and information security practices
- Follow firm accounts receivable policy and cease working on clients with a balance of 90+ days
- Accurately report and release billable and non-billable time consistently and understand its importance
- Maintain strong realization on revenue billed with a target goal of 85% or above
- Provide assistance, including tax research, to senior department staff and Members as needed
- Assist with tax audits and respond to inquiries from tax authorities
- Prepare documentation and support for audit defense
- Support special projects and initiatives within the Tax, Audit & Accounting, Financial Services, and CAS departments
- Develop team members and participate in business development activities
- Increase technical expertise in specialty/focus area either in a service area or industry segment, identifying ways to become more valuable
- Adhere to agreed-upon work schedule
Qualifications and Education Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field with appropriate GPA
- Knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles OR knowledge of the Internal Revenue Code, and application of federal and state regulations
- Familiar with IRS Circular 230 Regulations Governing Practice Before the IRS and the AICPA Professional Code of Conduct
- 3-5 years of experience working in public accounting
- CPA certification
Required Skills
- Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, orally and in writing
- Ability to use critical thinking to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form
- Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to clients and other employees of CNC
- Working knowledge of basic office technology, particularly Microsoft Office Suite including Excel
- Working knowledge and familiarity with all CNC accounting applications and CRM software
- Ability to apply basic mathematical skills
- Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations
- Ability to analyze and interpret quantitative data to draw conclusions and make recommendations
Working Conditions
- Typical office environment with standard office hours
- Occasional overtime may be required during peak periods (e.g., fiscal year-end, tax season)
